Before You Start

Building in a small form factor case is one of the most rewarding projects in PC building. It demands careful planning, patience, and attention to detail. This guide walks you through the essential steps to ensure your build goes smoothly from unboxing to first boot.

Step-by-Step Build Process

1. Plan Your Component Layout

Before touching a screw, lay out your components and confirm clearances. Verify GPU length, CPU cooler height, and PSU form factor against the case specifications. Mock-fit the motherboard inside the chassis to identify cable routing paths.

2. Install the CPU, RAM, and SSD on the Motherboard

It is far easier to install these components before the motherboard goes into the case. Mount the CPU and cooler, insert the RAM, and attach any M.2 SSDs. This gives you full access and prevents awkward angles inside the tight chassis.

3. Prep the Case

Remove all panels and set them aside on a soft surface. Install the motherboard standoffs in the correct positions for your board size. If your case uses a riser cable for the GPU, install it now according to the manual.

4. Mount the Motherboard

Carefully lower the motherboard into the case, aligning the ports with the I/O shield. Secure it with the provided screws, working in a diagonal pattern to ensure even pressure. Do not overtighten.

5. Install the Power Supply

Install the PSU early, but consider connecting modular cables before seating it if space is tight. Route the 24-pin motherboard cable and CPU power cable through designated cutouts before the PSU blocks access.

6. Install Storage and GPU

Mount any 2.5-inch drives in their designated brackets. Install the graphics card last, especially if it is a large model. Connect the PCIe power cables before fully seating the card if your layout makes post-installation cable connection difficult.

7. Cable Management

Use the case's built-in cable channels and tie-down points. Route cables behind the motherboard tray when possible. In SFF builds, custom-length cables make a dramatic difference. Take your time here. Good cable management improves airflow and makes future upgrades far easier.

8. Final Checks and First Boot

Double-check every power and data connection. Verify that no cables interfere with fans. Reinstall all panels and connect your monitor, keyboard, and power cord. Flip the PSU switch and press the power button. If everything is correct, you should see the BIOS splash screen within seconds.

  • Use custom cable lengths. Standard PSU cables are often too long for SFF cases. Custom or replacement cable kits drastically improve fit and airflow.
  • Thermal paste matters. A high-quality thermal compound and proper application technique can lower CPU temperatures by several degrees in compact builds.
  • Plan fan orientation. Understand positive versus negative pressure. In most SFF cases, a slight positive pressure setup with filtered intakes reduces dust buildup.
  • Work in stages. Do not rush to close the case. Boot test after installing the motherboard, CPU, and RAM to catch issues early before adding the GPU and storage.
